The novel is full of sarcasm and dark humour, even as it treats its serious subject, revealing the hypocrisies of the time. Like most of Dickens' work, the book is used to call the public's attention to various contemporary social evils, including the workhouse, child labour and the recruitment of children as criminals. It should, he believed, be directed toward social reform. Oliver Twist and Great Expectations are also frequently adapted, and, like many of his novels, evoke images of early Victorian London. His 1843 novella, A Christmas Carol, remains popular and continues to inspire adaptations in every artistic genre. Oliver Twist is an 1838 novel by Charles Dickens. Oliver Twist is a good illustration of Dickenss belief that the novel should do more than merely entertain. Dickens was regarded as the literary colossus of his age.
